my perspective is that, dancing is equivalent to playing an instrument, rather than playing a piano, or drums, u r playing ur body as an instrument..in order to play an instrument u got2 learn the fundamentals before you can play, in addition there are other factors have strength, conditioning, cardio/stamina, mental game
4 me, music and dancing go hand in hand, basic cause and effect and vice versa, i remember CHAZZ telling me that the music goes out through the instruments into ur body out into the crowd, and from the crowd, back through ur body, back into the music..AWESOME PHILOSOPHY from an AWESOME TEACHER, or something along those lines my love for dancing started way before i got into freestyle..i listen to a lot of trance/dance/club music, and i love dancing at concerts even if it means just jumping up and down, Energy 92.7 is my favorite radio station, when i go to reggae concerts it is more of a sway back and forth, when i workout (weights, running, jump rope, etc.) there is a rhythm i'm looking for..if im out with a girl im not going to start going off (well maybe a little bit :)) i just try to pick up her rhythm, i even have some straight up tribal drumming music on my ipod which i love getting down 2..personally, music is my number 1 inspiration, whatever the almigghty dj plays im programmed 2 dance 2 it, yaddadamean?? :)
Dance and Music go hand in hand for me. Music is a limiting factor in order for dance to exist, without music there would be no dance. So in a sense Music gives dance it's defitniton. On the other hand, dance gives people a feeling music can partially give and thats the VISUAL Entertainment aspect of the music. So both are highly improtant to me as a dancer, they simply coexsist in my world.

I'll state something I have said earlier (in the "is miming a street dance?" thread)
You don't need to have "music" playing in order for it to be dance.
Have you ever just slow danced with a girl, with no music playing?
Have you just heard something in your head and just started getting down?
Have you ever head some sort of sounds that just made a pattern and you just got down to that?
Something we ALL forget, is that silence is a part of music also. Just as creating a pause, or holding a position is part of your dance.
I've heard some people say that locking is a dance that is built off of poses. So does that mean once you pose and cease your movement, you cease dancing?
Without music, there damn well could still be dance.
Dance is a physical form of communication. Have you ever watched someone who is deaf have a conversation in sign language?
Have you ever watched a person who "talks with their hands"?
They are all rhythmical, fluid, telling a story, explaining something, or sharing emotions... That is backed by THOUGHT not music...
It's not until you break the mold and realize that dance is much more than moving in counts to music that you truly look into yourself, express your soul and become a DANCER.

man sal...you always quote that.
but for sure, dancing NOW is about the dance TO music in general. but in the end, i think the interpretation (dance) outweighs the muse (music). this is why in battles, we award prizes to the best performer - and not the best song.
but in the beginning, i started dancing for the ladies.
