Let it be known that the almighty Skeeter Rabbit, warrior of dance, was born earlier this month September 11 in 1959 (Virgos holla!!). He would therefore according to my calculations be an official 49er :). I'm still very new to popping and locking (started Jan. 08), but I am one of his biggest fans. He is my primary inspiration in dance, and always will be. I never had the chance to meet him before he passed, but from what Doc says and the knowledge I have collected online, he was truly a master of all masters. Popping, Locking, Cyborg, all dance in general Skeet was a complete dancer (if there is such a thing) and still remains the "Lord of Funk". When I first started learning the art and I typed in "Popping" online, one of the first videos that came up was him and Pete's Popping tutorial. After seeing him demonstrate the "Scarecrow" style I was hooked. What attracted me to Skeet was that he made dancing, an art that is stereotypically considered feminine, very masculine and athletic. I was way more into Popping, not really interested in Locking until I found out that Skeet was an amazing Locker, and that the styles of Popping and the Fresno Boogaloo style were derived from it. That is when I said to myself "if he did it then I have to" and looked online and found the Groove Mekanex (thank God, so grateful I found you guys!!). Every time I dance I keep a model of Skeet in my head and in my heart. Everytime I get discouraged, or feel like I'm not improving, or say question myself, I imagine what he would say "you got the funk inside you, be open to learning from everyone, be patient and keep at it J, most important have fun". His lessons extend beyond the dance floor and into life. He is the primary dancer I aspire to be like sharing his love, foundation, work ethic, and positive attitude toward dancing. I want to wish him a very happy birthday and thank him for the wealth of knowledge he has left behind!! Skeet is the Ultimate Teacher, he continues to inspire and teach from beyond the grave, and his spirit and memory will always live on inside this funkster. Therefore I think we should dub this month "Skeetember" in honor of the legendary Skeeter Rabbit...Funk In Peace, Stephen Nichols aka Skeeter 1959-2006 - J :)
