its been a while since i've seen the entire movie, but i think its pretty good as a movie about hip hop.
I was most involved in the graf portions of the movie.
The movie does cover all the elements, and isn't campy and stupid about it (like breakin :D )
Maybe once i watch it again i'll have a better opinion about it. but from what i remember it was the best snapshot at hip hop in the early 80's/late 70's.

CLASSIC!!!
"uhhh its like a heart beat, Im talkin bout beat street"
Ok, so the acting at times gets kinda cheesy, and I don't know why they had to kill off the graffiti writer, but this movie holds a special place in my heart. I thought the first battle scene between rock steady and NY city breakers was the sh**!!! I remember watching it over and over to try and get crazy legs swipes down. haha that was back when I wanted to be a b-boy, but I also thought the Lee character was pretty crazy too. When I went back and watched it after I got into popping more I remember not being as impressed, although he does have some nice glides and a cool boogie boy style.
"Damn Spit!!" haha
Although Im still pissed they killed off the graffiti writer

I liked the production values of this movie. Would have been how I would have made BREAKIN (if I had made it).
I never liked the popping, except for the little bit that Wiggles does during the Christmas section (too short though)...loved his locking in that.
Back to the popping...but my sentiment back then when this first came out was how I envisioned "New York Style" being. All soft and not having the hard hits and robotic feeling from the Bay or west coast. The glides were nice but the movie did nothing for popping - just my opinion.
The bboying was awesome though.
PS: I had submitted my "Street Beat" story into a scriptwriting class to a teacher that knew Harry Belafonte then. Hhhhmmmmmmmm....oh well, I still liked my version better..haha!
