I know there were debates as to where popping came from on other message boards. What I'm going to say is that from what I've personally learne, seen, and researched, I believe what most dancers around the world would consider as "popping", the style of dance, came from Boogaloo Sam, out of Fresno, California.
I know there are many of you who are not aware of the debate, and I know it's not fair for me to just give you my personal opinion, I strongly urge you to do your own research and find out for yourself. Please take some time to find out the history of this style, I believe it will make you a better student of this culture as well as a better dancer of this style.
Here is a clip of Boogaloo Sam back in 1976.
